Data Management Plan Support
Help with Your Data Management Plan
In order to ensure that all NSF proposals coming out of the University of Virginia meet the data management plan requirements, researchers are encouraged to consult with staff in the U.Va. Library's Scientific Data Consulting Group (SciDaC). We recommend that researchers use the DMPTool (http://dmp.cdlib.org) to create their data management plan. U.Va. Library's SciDaC group, along with teams at several other research institutions, developed the DMPTool application to help researchers generate data management plans. As a University of Virginia DMPTool user, researchers should use Netbadge and their U.Va. computing ID to access the DMPTool. As a U.Va. user, researchers will have links to local U.Va. resources for guidance and help while developing the data management plan.
The following funders' data management and sharing plans are currently supported in the DMPTool: NSF, NEH (DHIG), and the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation.
Checklist for using the DMPTool
(refer to the DMPTool Guide - https://dmp.cdlib.org/help/guide for help in using the tool):
- Select your Funding Agency
- Step through the different sections in the plan
- Read the Help Text for each section
- Consider the questions within the Help Text
- In the text box, compose your answers to the questions
- Modify the answers into prose that makes sense as a paragraph
- When you have finished all sections, export your DMP as "Rich Text" format
- When you have completed your data management plan, send a copy to the SciDaC group (scidac@virginia.edu). We'll review it for you and make any suggestions or recommendations, or help to answer questions for things you are uncertain about.
For those who wish to use our data management plan templates, they are still available on our template site. As we identify new funders with data management and/or sharing plans, we will not be creating new templates, but will instead be including guidance and specific information only within the DMPTool.
DISCLAIMER: The consulting advice provided by the University of Virginia Library's Scientific Data Consulting (UVA SciDaC) Group is to be considered only as advice based on experience working with researchers on data management planning, and is to be used with the understanding that the U.Va. SciDaC is not rendering legal or compliance advice on specific matters. If you have specific questions or concerns, U.Va. SciDaC recommends that you consult with appropriate legal counsel and grants administration advisors (usually Dave Hudson in the Office of the Vice President for Research) with respect to your individual situation.
