Meet the Scientific Data Consultants
The University of Virginia Library has been building expertise in data management for years now. Building upon that expertise, the Scientific Data Consulting Group (SciDaC) was developed in 2010 in response to an increased need for data management support. Contact us now to start a conversation about your research.
Andrew Sallans, Head of Strategic Data Initiatives / Scientific Data Consulting Group
Andrew has been working with data since starting 8 years ago in the geographic information systems and archaeology area. Since that time, he has moved onto scientific data problems with researchers in environmental sciences, biology, engineering, and numerous other areas. Until it's closing in May 2010, Andrew served as the Head of the Research Computing Lab, managing data services for all U.Va. science and engineering students, faculty, and staff. He now serves as the Head of Strategic Data Initiatives and the Scientific Data Consulting Group. He has a BA in History, Archaeology, and Art History, a MS in Library and Information Studies, and a MS in the Management of Information Technology.Areas of focus: integration of technology in the data lifecycle, data management budgeting, data policy, and data ownership issues.
Bill Corey, Scientific Data Consultant
Bill has been working for the University of Virginia for 20 years, the last 8 for the University Library. Over the years, he has supported the research process primarily through central support operations in Clemons Library, LEO, management of the Ivy Annex, the Google Book Project, and most recently in the Ivy Stacks Retrofit Project. He is now focused on how technology is changing libraries and the research process, and is working on emerging research data management issues. He has a BA in Philosophy, and is working on his MS in Library and Information Studies.Areas of focus: open access, data repositories, digital libraries, and data ownership and access policies.
Andrea Horne, Health Sciences Data Consultant
Andrea has been working with researchers for over 20 years as a librarian specializing in the biomedical sciences. She leads the Health Sciences Library's efforts to coordinate and develop library services to support issues related to e-science, data management, and digital resources for scientific research. She currently is developing her knowledge of scientific data management practices by completing a residency with the SciDac team, with the goal of offering similar services to the U.Va. health sciences community. Andrea has a BS in Biology, and a MLIS in Library and Information.Areas of focus: bioinformatics, metadata, and policy.
Sherry Lake, Senior Scientific Data Consultant
Sherry has been working with scientific data for about 25 years. She has expertise in programming, UNIX systems, database structures and software, as well as many of the major metadata standards of the past 10 years. Sherry has worked in both industry and academics, and is particularly strong in helping researchers improve their process and data management practices. Over the past several years, Sherry has worked in the Research Computing Lab in support of a wide assortment of data problems in environmental sciences, biology, engineering, economics, business, and other areas. She has a BS in Computer Science, and a MS in Information Sciences.Areas of focus: software, data management and organization, databases and metadata throughout the data lifecycle.
The Scientific Data Consulting Group is also currently working with the VP of Research and VP/CIO on strategies to provide institution-wide solutions for improving data management practices, particularly in response to emerging funder requirements for data management planning. Among the strategies, SciDaC serves in a leadership capacity for the integration of data archiving into UVA's Institutional Repository (IR) "Libra".
