Funding Guidelines
Data Guidelines from Major Funding Agencies
As budgets tighten and research trends change, funding agencies are increasingly requiring more comprehensive attention to data management. At this point, there many different guidelines, varying by agency. See the table below for links to some of the main agencies, and a summary of their requirements. Given our experience working with researchers in many areas, we often have a good sense of what is expected from many agencies and tracks within those agencies. | NSF (Project Description including Data Sharing) | Change in the existing policy on sharing research data...., NSF is planning to require that all proposals include a data management plan in the form of a two-page supplementary document. NSF Sharing Data Update. |

| NIH (Data Sharing Policy) | NIH expects and supports the timely release and sharing of final research data from NIH-supported studies for use by other researchers. Investigators submitting an NIH application seeking $500,000 or more in direct costs in any single year are expected to include a plan for data sharing or state why data sharing is not possible. |
| NASA (Science Mission Directorate) | Key Point: NASA promotes the full and open sharing of all data with the research and applications communities, private industry, academia, and the general public. |
