The Children's Literature Collection

What is in the Children's Literature Collection?

Sample children's book: Olivia

The University of Virginia Library 's Education Services began the children's literature collection in 1973. The collection includes books for the age groups birth to age 18. The library limits the collection to award-winning fiction and nonfiction books for children. All books in this collection can be checked out using the Self Check-out machine located in the Curry Learning Commons.

The award(s) given to a book in this collection is listed on the front inside book cover. However, the name of the awards are abbreviated. Here is a list of the various awards and their abbreviations. Some of the older book titles may be part of the collection because the book had a starred review in one or more of six journals that specialize in children's literature reviews. The starred review book list was discontinued in 2001 as a criteria for inclusion in the collection. For short explanations about many of the awards, visit the Database of Award Winning Children's Literature.
