ERIC ED Documents: Online & On Microfiche
Online: 1993-present. ERIC ED documents are available from 1993-present for level 1 documents. To access them online, patrons must use the ERIC database offered through ERIC (EBSCO) or ERIC (CSA) or ERIC (U.S. Department of Education) . When you locate an ED document using either of these versions of ERIC, you can click on the FULLTEXT link and get the entire article online, for example, ED424824.
Online: Prior to 1993. Many ERIC documents that were originally only on microfiche are now available online through Google or the ERIC database. To locate an ERIC document using Google. You may locate the full text of ED documents by using Advanced Google and entering the title of the document in the second set of boxes labeled "with the exact phrase." When searching the ERIC database, you may be able to access some of these documents full text.
If you get a level 2 or level 3 document, these are only available on microfiche (See below). U.Va. affiliates who wish to access this database using EBSCO or CSA from off-Grounds must first set up a UVA Anywhere Client or a Proxy Server Account before you can access the database. The search interface from the U. S. Department of Education may be used by anyone with Internet access. Call a reference librarian if you need assistance 434.-294.7039.
Microfiche copies: 1966 - 2001. ERIC ED documents are available from 1966-2001 in our ERIC microfiche collection. This includes ED000001 through ED458352. The ERIC microfiche are filed by their six-digit ERIC number (for example, ED123678) in several black cabinets located in the U.Va. Alderman Library. Patrons can print out paper copies from the microfiche using the library's microfiche printer.
Locate copy on an organization's web site. Another way to obtain full text is to look at the ERIC record. If the ED document research was sponsored by an organization, you can sometimes gain access to the full text of the ED document if you go to the website of the organization that sponsored the research.
Locate copy using Google. You may locate the full text of ED documents by using Advanced Google and entering the title of the document in the second set of boxes labeled "with the exact phrase."
Locate full text of ERIC Digests. You can always get the full text of all ERIC Digests online without charge!
When you do an ERIC database search, if you get a citation with a six-digit number preceded by ED, it might be an ERIC Digest. Some versions of ERIC will identify it as such in the ERIC record. If you are not sure if the ED document is a digest, try this link and find out!
