Just Starting School at Curry?
Every year the CLIC librarians hear former students advising new students to set up the following technology and library accounts during the first week of school.
You can follow the links below and set up your accounts. In addition, the librarians in the CLIC will be holding workshops in the CLIC computer lab to show you how to set up the accounts and when to use them. Check out the WORKSHOP section in the right column of this newsletter for a list of dates and times.
- Set up your VPN client or proxy. If you are using your laptop, desktop computer, or mobile device such as an iPod Touch or iPhone to access U.Va. resources when you are off-Grounds, you must authenticate by using either the Proxy or VPN UVaAnywhere. Either of these accounts will verify you are a U.Va. affiliate and, in turn, you will be able to have access to U.Va. resources such as full text journal articles, ebooks, library databases, etc.
The proxy method is quick to set up. If you set up the proxy on your FireFox browser, you will need to use FireFox to access the U.Va. resources. If at a later date, you switch to the IE or Safari browser, you will need to configure those browsers before you can use them.
Questions about setting up the VPN Account? Call U.Va's ITC HELP DESK staff 24 hours a day seven days a week at 434-924-HELP.
- Students, faculty and staff can connect to the Hive to get remote access to specialized software programs including SPSS (SPSS is now called PSAW Statistics 18) from virtually anywhere, via the Internet.
- Your Eservices Account is already set up. You must login to public computers at U.Va. using your eservices account login and password. You have already been assigned and received an automatically generated password from U.Va. for eservices. NOTE: When or if you change your U.Va. email password, this does not change your eservices password. If you want to change your Eservices password or if you have forgotten it, go to the Lost Passwords/Changing Passwords web site.
- Set up your free
Account. RefWorks is a software application that enables you to:
- Download citations from databases and put them into your personal RefWorks research database
- Format bibliographies and citations automatically in over 400 styles including APA, MLA, etc.
- Use in conjunction with WORD to write papers, dissertations, etc.
- Access your RefWorks account from any computer, anywhere over the internet
- Create a database of articles and share it with colleagues around the world (RefShare)
Once you set up a RefWorks account, you can save citations for articles, books, dissertations, etc. into RefWorks and access them from any computer anywhere. Citations in your RefWorks account will have a button. Click it and you can in most cases read the article full text. If full text is not available, you will be able to either obtain the print copy from a U.Va. library or obtain a digital copy through the Library's InterLibrary Services. You can also attach a copy of an article in your RefWorks account, thus, negating the need to use the button. See our RefWorks page for more information. More good news. After you graduate from U.Va., you can continue to access your RefWorks account without cost!
- Set up your InterLibrary Services Account.
This account allows you to obtain journal articles, book chapters, books, dissertations, and other materials not available at any of the U.Va. Libraries. Once you set up an account, you can submit requests to the library using the account to acquire, for example, a book which the U.Va. Library system does not own. There is no charge for this service.
Click here to set up an InterLibrary account. Click on the button, "First Time Users" on the right side of the page and fill out the form. In addition, the InterLibrary Services account also enables you to recall books or other items that are checked out to another patron. For example, if you are using the online catalog, VIRGO and see a book that you want is checked out, you can click the "recall link" and the patron who has the book will be notified by email that he or she has 8 days to return the item to a U.Va. library. (The patron will not know who recalled the book.) When the patron returns the book to an U.Va.library, staff will send the book to the CLIC or the library service point that you designate as the pick-up location. Staff will then send you an email when the book arrives in that location and is ready for you to pick up. If you elect to have the recalled book sent to the CLIC for pick-up, staff will put the book on the HOLD shelf near the entrance to the CLIC. It will already be checked out to you so all you need to do is locate the HOLD shelf and take the book. If you asked for the book to be sent to another library location, you will pick up the item at that library's circulation desk.
- Home Directory Account - This account allows you to safely save and access all of your documents on a U.Va. server and access them from any computer anywhere in the world. Documents on the home directory are backed up every 2 hours and you can retrieve items you accidently delete. All U.Va. faculty and students already have an account.
How do you access your home directory account? If you are on-Grounds and login to a public computer, you can save your class papers, dissertation, etc. to the Home Directory drive by clicking on the save button in WORD and selecting home directory.
If you are using your own laptop on-Grounds or off-Grounds, you can also your access the Home Directory by either using the web interface or by downloading and setting up the Home Directory software onto your laptop or desktop computer.
- Set up your On Grounds Wireless Account - Want to use your laptop on-Grounds? Get a wireless account.
- Set up your laptop to print to a public printer on-Grounds. UVa is currently changing the way you print to public printers from your laptop and from UVa public computers. If you use public computers, there is no noticeable change.
If you are using your laptop to print to the public printer in the CLIC, you currently will need to download the printer driver, Education B&W 3812 onto your laptop. To pay for your printing, you must open a Cavalier Advantage account and activate it by depositing funds with the University onto your student I.D. card which then becomes a debit card.
In some libraries on-Grounds, a new printing system called "follow me" printing has gone into place. Instructions for printing from your laptop to public printers will be posted on the UVa Printing and Copying Services web site as soon as they are available. Health Sciences Library has created instructions and you can use these as the information is the same although it says Health Sciences Library.
- Set up a Cavalier account to pay for your printing on-Grounds, parking in the U.Va. Parking Garage (you will get a discount if you pay using funds from this account), and purchasing books and other items in the bookstore.
- Set up a mobile account that allows you to use your mobile devices (iPad, iPod Touch, iPhone, Blackberry, etc.) on the U.Va. network. Register your mobile device first and then, configure the device.
- Your Library Account is already set up. To login to your account, use your computing ID and the last 4-digits of your university ID number. Use this online account to renew books and other library materials, view titles of the items you have checked out, and see a list of items you have on "hold" that are awaiting pickup from the HOLD SHELF at the library location you designated.
