NAEP NEW DATA TOOL
A new addition to the suite of National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) data tools greatly expands the accessibility of data on urban students in grades 4 and 8, a population of great interest to education policy makers.

The District Profiles Tool offers information about the urban districts that participated in the NAEP Trial Urban District Assessment (TUDA) program. Compare the performance of 4th and 8th grade public school students in TUDA districts to students in the nation, in large cities, and their respective states, and see how certain districts performed over time. Create downloadable maps and charts, and read snapshots with demographic information for each district.

RefWorks & WEB OF SCIENCE
This 2 minute tutorial will show you how to search the database Web of Science and download the selected citations into Refworks. Watch the tutorial.

RefWorks Software Update UPDATE

Issues with Write-N-Cite and Macs

When working with Word on a Mac and Write-N-Cite, the current version of Write-N-Cite requires that you first save the file before selecting Bibliography tab to format the paper.  Here are some tips to ensure this goes smoothly:

  • Save the file as .doc  If you save it as .docx it will not be able to produce the format paper.
  • Only make changes to the original document (the document with the citations in pre-format state that look like {{123 Author Year}}.  If you make changes to the document that has some citations formatted correctly and some still in pre-format state, your bibliography will not be formatted correctly
Note: RefWorks is developing Write-N-Cite 3 which will come up out sometime during the summer of 2011 that will help alleviate these issues.

Timeline for Congress CONGRESSIONAL TIMELINE
The Dirksen Congressional Center has created this multimedia congressional timeline chalk full of videos, primary documents, audio and more. They welcome your input! Please contact us at the Dirkson Center with suggestions. We’ll do our best to respond and improve the timeline.

For each Congress beginning with the 73rd (1933-35), this timeline features session dates, partisan composition, the presidential administration, a list of congressional leaders, and notable legislation passed. This first version only addresses legislative output, not non-legislative events such as the impeachment of President Clinton or internal congressional processes or congressional politics. We plan to leave room for expansion to include such elements as a timeline of notable, non-congressional events and selections from our historical collections.

Here’s how it works.

* Go to the CTL index page at http://www.congressionaltimeline.org/

* On the top right, click on SELECT A CONGRESS icon and select the 88th Congress.

* Click the "expand" button under 1963 to see general information about the  88th.

* To experience the multimedia potential for the site, click the "collapse"  button for 1963 and the "expand" button for the Civil Rights Act of 1964 at July 2, 1964.

* Check out the rotating cube! You will see additional content -- documents, photos, even a video of the presidential signing ceremony.

* If you would like to contribute to the timeline, use the wiki component --just click on "wiki" on the rotating cube.
