Ebook: Visualizing Data EBOOK: VISUALIZING DATA
What is data visualization? Read this ebook to find out!

An example of data visualization DATA VISUALIZATION
Example 1: This example features a motion chart disaggregating 8th grade NAEP in Mathematics and Reading by economic and ethnic subgroups, 2000-2009. The example is simple and, yet highly effective.

Example 2: Hans Rosling isa Swedish medical doctor, academic, statistician and public speaker. He is Professor of International Health at Karolinska Institute. In this visualization, he examines the correlation between income growth and life expectancy in 200 countries over the last 200 hundred years in an amazing animation. The visualization technology is incredible.

Example 3: Jeffrey Heer, Stanford University professor demonstrates interactive, collaborative data visualization and not only the answers it can provide, but the questions it can provoke.

UVACSE (UVa Alliance for computational Science and Engineering) SEEKS YOUR INPUT
UVa Alliance for Computational Science and Engineering (UVACSE) invite faculty and graduate students to complete the Visualization Lab survey using the following link: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/CKB6M38

"To date, visualization has not been well-supported at the University; however, the potential now exists to provide researchers with the resource they need to accomplish this. UVACSE goal is to be as inclusive as possible. Therefore, before resources are committed, we would like to explore the technical and support options—staffing, equipment, “Viz Lab,” and so forth—and how they can benefit University researchers. Your opinions are extremely important in helping us move forward with planning and implementation. We know you are busy but would appreciate your ideas and input."--Andrew Grimshaw
Professor of Computer Science
Director of the UVACSE

There are over 300 Handbooks in the CLIC IN THE CLIC
The CLIC has over 300 handbooks for you to use when you are researching topics.

What is a handbook? Handbooks are a great place to start your research and literature reviews. They are a resource for locating best practices, research theories, names of authors, background material, overviews of topics, and good keyword terminology to use when you search databases for journal articles and other materials to inform and support your research. Some handbooks are online and others are located in the HANDBOOK section of the book shelves in the Curry Library Innovation Commons [CLIC]. The Handbooks are shelved in the study area to the left as you enter the CLIC. Handbooks must be read, photocopied or scanned in the CLIC as handbooks cannot be taken out of the CLIC.

Students can scan chapters from the handbooks and email them to themselves by using the CLIC's free digital sender. Faculty should use LEO to request copies.

From your search results page, one click will display the full text of an article or tell you whether or not a book is on the shelf. Try out VIRGO today.

RefWorks2.0 is here UPDATE
The folks at RefWorks have been listening to your input, and have created even better ways to organize your work within RefWorks as well as evolved collaborative and navigational capabilities. They are very excited to announce a new wave of enhancements in response to customer demand that are available now:
• Subfolders—for creating folders within folders that keep information organized and easy to share.
• Folder de-duplication—for de-duping within a single folder to remove multiple occurrences of a reference.
• Limiting fields in shared items—for sharing only the desired references and information with colleagues. Account owners will be able to choose which fields to show for each share.
• Combined Folders and Sharing page—for improved display on one screen. Easier than ever to manage folders and decide which ones to share.
