This is just a reminder. Curry's Discovering Differences Action Team (DDAT) is sponsoring a common reading experience for the Curry community for this school year. The book selected for Curry's Big Read is Whistling Vivaldi: How Stereotypes Affect Us and What We Can Do by Claude Steele.

Copies of Whistling Vivaldi are on the bookcase in the CLIC. You can check out a copy from the CLIC librarians. The loan period is two weeks. Please return your checked out copy to either of the CLIC librarians.

Are you already reading Whistling Vivaldi? Do you need to reflect about what you've read? Share your thoughts on the Whistling Vivaldi Blog at http://curry.virginia.edu/blog/whistlingvivaldi/.
The DDAT team looks forward to hearing from you.

BIBLES, ROPES, MAPS AND MORE
This fall the Albert and Shirley Small Special Collections Library at the University of Virginia will feature an exhibit celebrating the 250th anniversary of Charlottesville. Artifacts such as the first known map of Charlottesville, a section of the rope used to hang an scandalous mayor and the Bible used in the coronation of Queen Charlotte will be featured.

"Other parts of the exhibit will examine more recent issues such as segregation and the desegregation of the schools, as well as the dismantling of Charlottesville's predominantly black Vinegar Hill neighborhood. Much of that history is seen through the eyes of Rebecca McGinnis, a black educator and city resident who recounted her experience with Jim Crow in a 1997 interview, when she was 105 more... "

HOOS YOUR  Data announcement
Throughout the semester, we will be highlighting information about finding, organizing, analyzing, managing, displaying, and preserving your research data. See this week's featured data information below.

NIH Podcasts GRANT PODCASTS
The Office of Extramural Research (OER) presents conversations with NIH staff members. Designed for investigators, fellows, students, research administrators, and others, we provide insights on grant topics from those who live and breathe the information. In mp3 and updated monthly. You can listen to the podcasts or read the transcripts.

Scientific Data Consulting services
Submitting a grant proposal in the near future? Some granting agencies are requiring that you submit a data management plan, and we predict more will be required in the near future. (Plus, we know you will agree, it is always good to have a data plan whether it is required or not by a granting agency. After all, it makes it easier for your lab team or center staff to use the data.) To make the data plan requirement easier to meet, the Scientific Data Consulting Group consults with researchers on technical and policy aspects and how to make your plan meet both funder requirements and the UVA research environment. Click here to view the data plan tool, schedule a consult, and view additional resources.
