Questions you asked the CLIC librarians this week  AND THE ANSWER IS...
Ever wonder what questions the CLIC librarians are asked to field? Here is a sample from this week.

  • Question 1. Where do you find data sets?

  • Answer 1. There are a variety of resources. I'll start you off with this one, A Guide to Social and Behavioral Data. which was developed by staff in the Scholar's Lab.

  • Question 2. I know I read the "Handbook of College Reading and Study Strategy Research" online. I'm not sure where I found it online. Can you help me relocate it?

  • Answer 2. The first place that I would suggest looking is Google Books. Go to Google Books and enter the title of your book. Note: there may be several listings for the book. Why? There might be a listing for the hardback copy, another for the paperback, etc. So, click on all that are possibilities. Once you click, look on the top left of the screen and you will indicate availability. ebook buy Ebook for Free

  • The second place to look would be the UVa Library's online catalog, VIRGO. Enter you title and you may see multiple listings because VIRGO lists paperback copies separate from hardback copies and online copies. this is the same convention Amazon, Barnes and Noble and other web sites use. The good news is we found an online copy in VIRGO. Thanks for asking!

Logo for the National Assessment of Educational Progress  VIDEOS: INTRODUCING NAEP
The National Center for Education Statistics (NAEP) designed two videos, Introducing NAEP to Teachers and Introducing NAEP to Students, that explain NAEP assessments. These short videos feature real educators sharing their thoughts on the National Assessment of Educational Progress and how teachers and students can prepare to participate and excel in the program.

BACKGROUND: The National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) is the largest nationally representative and continuing assessment of what America's students know and can do in various subject areas. Assessments are conducted periodically in mathematics, reading, science, writing, the arts, civics, economics, geography, and U.S. history.

Since NAEP assessments are administered uniformly using the same sets of test booklets across the nation, NAEP results serve as a common metric for all states and selected urban districts. The assessment stays essentially the same from year to year, with only carefully documented changes. This permits NAEP to provide a clear picture of student academic progress over time.
