Computing in the Libraries

Using Laptops in the Libraries

The libraries have a very limited number of public computer workstations available in each location. Patrons are strongly encouraged to bring their personal laptops or mobile devices to the library to do their work. Several libraries have basic laptop accessories like power strips and locks available, and Clemons Library has additional resources such as keyboards, mice, thumb drives, and large external monitors.

For any problems with the public workstations, or with connecting a personal device to the U.Va. wireless network, please call the ITC Help Desk at 434-924-4357.

Connecting a Laptop to the U.Va. Network

Make sure you have a wireless card installed in your laptop. To view ITC's recommendations for wireless cards see: http://itc.virginia.edu/network/wireless/card-choose.html. To connect to cavalier, U.Va.'s encrypted wireless network, follow the instructions here: http://www.itc.virginia.edu/network/wireless/encrypted.html.

For further information about the U.Va. wireless network see ITC's Wireless homepage at:http://www.itc.virginia.edu/wireless/

You can also connect your laptop to the University's wired network with an ethernet card. Ask the library staff about the location of network ports. Network cables are available for checkout at Alderman, Bio-Psych, Clemons, and the Brown Science & Engineering Library.

Connecting to the U.Va. Network as a Guest

If you are a guest of the University, you can obtain a temporary passcode to connect to U.Va.'s unencrypted wireless network. This passcode can be obtained from the service desks in Alderman, Clemons, and Brown libraries. You will need to show a photo ID and provide your name and e-mail address at the time the passcode is issued. The passcode is valid for seven days; when it expires, you will need to request a new one.

Printing and Copying

Printing and copying in the libraries are managed by Printing and Copying Services (PCS). Photocopy machines and laser printers are located in every library. Color printers are available in Alderman Library (Scholars' Lab and 3rd floor), Clemons Library (4th floor), Brown Science & Engineering Library (main floor), and the Fine Arts Library. Ask at any library service desk for specific locations.

To learn how to set up your own laptop to print on a library printer, follow the directions for your operating system:

If you have trouble, here are some printing tips. If you see a service outage you can report it to PCS.

All B&W 8.5x11" printing and copying costs $.08 per copy. Color 8.5x11" printing costs $.60 per copy.

Duplexing (double-sided) printing is now available in Alderman (4th floor and Scholars' Lab), Brown Science & Engineering, and Clemons. To select double-sided printing:

  • Select "Print"
  • Click "Properties" or "Preferences" (depending on your application)
  • Select the "Layout" tab
  • Click "Flip on Long Edge"

Cavalier Advantage cards are needed for all printing and copying. U.Va. and non-UVA community members can purchase a Cavalier Advantage card or add money to it at the vending machines located on the main floors in Alderman, Clemons, Fine Arts, and Brown Science and Engineering libraries. Make a deposit to your Cavalier Advantage card online or via phone or mail.

Need to print quickly? Some libraries have "express" workstations with a 10 minute time limit, so one will always be available for printing out a paper in a hurry.

Scanning

Faculty may submit requests to scan course materials for UVaCollab or Toolkit via Interlibrary Services.

Publicly accessible flatbed scanners for text or image scanning are located in:

The 3rd floor of Alderman Library provides three machines for scanning microfilm and microfiche, along with staff to provide assistance.

The Digital Media Lab provides access to scanners that digitize slides, 35mm film, music, and video.

The Fiske Kimball Fine Arts Library provides training on image digitization and access to scanners.

The Music Library processes requests for the digitization of music for Electronic Listening Assignment delivery through Toolkit.

Digitization Services (434-924-4026) in the Harrison Institute and Small Special Collections Library will scan materials from Special Collections for researchers.

Digitization Guidelines are available, which provide guidance and minimum recommendations for the digitization of images, texts, and data that are in line with the U.Va. Library's current practice for faculty who wish to donate digital materials for inclusion in the Library's digital collections.

ITC also offers scanners and training.
