Founding and Early History

During the early years of its operation, the nursery staff was composed of four ladies who had public school teaching certificates but no special training in kindergarten work. When WPA support was withdrawn in 1943, the staff decreased from four to three. Despite the cut in funds, daycare enrollement grew and it became necessary to add one full-time teacher, a part-time cook, a janitor, and a nurse. In 1950, the daycare employed a full-time, trained director and soon thereafter, the number of applications increased significantly, far exceeding the capacity of the nursery and resulting in a waiting list that was over half of the enrollment. In 1952 the daycare board approved the employment of another full-time teacher.

Among the papers of the Barrett Daycare, there are a number of documents related to the activities and hiring of staff. In 1967, for example, the daycare advertised a position and hired a new teacher...
