The files currently posted on this site represent an outline and sample materials for a larger project, for which the University of Virginia Library Special Collections Department and the University of Virginia French Department have recently obtained grant funding. The full-scale project will be underway in January 2003, thanks to the generous support of the Florence Gould Foundation.

The web site will include digital facsimiles of sixteenth-century printed books in the Douglas H. Gordon Collection and an on-line network of resources designed to situate the books within the rich context of the French Renaissance, which produced them. The project seeks to give these rare and beautiful French books, otherwise tucked away in library vaults, a more visible and vibrant role in humanities teaching and scholarship, and to do so in ways that contribute to long-term conservation efforts.
