Through tribal initiatives and pan-tribal coalitions, in the mid-twentieth century, Native Americans continued their battle to force the government to honor treaty obligations and respect tribal sovereignty. The occupation of Alcatraz in 1970 and Wounded Knee in 1973 drew national media attention to the longstanding grievances of America’s first peoples.
