The digital version of Exploring the West from Monticello: A Perspective
in Maps from Columbus to Lewis and Clark is based on the printed catalog
of the same title. The text of the catalog was written by Guy Meriwether
Benson, Lewis and Clark Trail Heritage Foundation, with William Irwin
and Heather Moore, Associate
Curator of American History and Literature,
Special Collections Department.
The initial hypertext markup and design was prepared by Melissa
Smith Kennedy, graduate student in the English
Department, as a class project for the American Hypertext Workshop of the
American Studies Program. The digital
version of the catalog was originally prepared using facsimiles of the maps
in the exhibition.
Additional digital imaging and hypertext markup was carried out by the staff
of the Special Collections Digital Center
from original materials in the Tracy
W. McGregor Library of American History. When original maps were too large
to be digitized, images were prepared using either facsimiles or slides.
