Harper, Frances Ellen Watkins HarperIola Leroy: or shadows uplifted, This important work was published in the author's native Philadelphia, and is only the second by an African American woman. It is indeed rare. A moralistic story of a wealthy fair-skinned family of mixed race who are betrayed by a family member, and are sold into slavery just before the Civil War.
