The Amphitheater

Kimball designed the McIntire Amphitheater named in honor of Paul Goodloe McIntire. A newspaper article, published at the time of its design and construction, maintains that this "greek theater" will be only the seventh such classical structure in America and this one, seating 3,600, is by far the largest. The amphitheater was first used for the 1921 Commencement marking the Centennial of the University (World War I had delayed this celebration from 1919 until 1921). The site of commencement exercises from the early 1920s through the 1940s and cultural events and performances, the Amphitheater immediately played and continues to play a significant role in student life at the University.
