A Guide to Using DYABOLA:
Resources of the Deutsches Archaiologisches Institut, Rome

The catalogue of the German Archeological Institute has always been an important resource in the study of classical archaeology, as well as in the study of art, architecture and Greco-Roman culture.  It indexes periodicals, symposia, festschriften and other publications from 1956 to the present.

PROJEKT DYABOLA (web) the online version of the DAI catalogue; offers keyword searching in author, title, series and periodical indexes, as well as subject searching in the familiar Dyabola Subject tree.  In addition, PROJEKT DYABOLA also offers several other databases of interest to archaeologists and art historians, e.g. the Census of Antique Art known to the Renaissance (images included).

Choose DYABOLA WEB (click on English if it defaults to German)

Check the box marked "IP-Access." This database is only available to the U.Va. community.

Click on START

Dyabola will default to the most recent citations.

Choose: REALKATALOG JAHRESBIBLIOGRAPHIE 1999 and ENGLISH from the Menu.

For a complete listing of all citations,

Choose:  REALKATALOG DAI ROM and ENGLISH from the Menu

In either catalogue, the screen will default to the QUICK SEARCH but you may also chose from any of the buttons in the left frame to search in the subject or keyword index. As you try different search strategies, your results will appear in the frame on the right marked Result List.

QUICK SEARCH

Choose your index:          AUTHOR          or          TITLE

Keyword                       Stewart, A                       Hellenistic (note: keyword in this search = the first word in the title)

The search engine is case-sensitive, so remember to capitalize properly.  This will give you a list of results and you click on the blue arrow to browse them.  If you are in the AUTHOR index, you may click on the LINKS button and all the works by that author will appear as hot links to the citation.  The catalogue uses abbreviations, but a nice feature of the web version is that the full title is given in the top left frame for each individual citation.

SUBJECT TREE

Choose your subject from those in the subject list by clicking on its Blue Cross.

You may request to browse the whole subject in which case the set will begin in 1956 and go forward, but not backward.  You may also browse the table of contents for some publications given in the citations by clicking on LINKS.

Many subjects are extensive, so continue to reduce your set by clicking on the cross, or by refining your search within the set when offered.  For example:

Subject:  Iconographic Themes

   Gods and Mythology

Search:   Achilles

SEARCH STRING (precise keyword search)

Choose: Exakte Schreibweise

Keyword: lekythoi           or          Keyword: Pompeii

This search is the closest to a keyword search possible.

COMBINE SETS

You may refine your search by combining sets.  Choose COMBINE from the buttons in the frame, and then choose the sets you wish to combine from each of the menus.

PRINT

Printing is available in PROJEKT DYABOLA.  You must click on the frame containing the citation, right click on your mouse, choose “Open frame in a new window”, and print the new page.   At this point, you may continue to browse citations in the web browser and choose those you wish to print or download.  You may also do a quick screen print of one page by using “control P”.
