The genealogical researcher who is attempting to trace an emigrant ancestry must first determine the emigrant's identity and the port and date of landing. The following list of general sources includes several ship passenger lists and two major bibliographies of ship passenger lists (see Filby and Lancour below).

Alphabetical arrangement of English counties, listing the name of the emigrant, his parish, ship's name, the New England town he settled in, and the reference source of the information. Also included are indexes of wives and children of emigrants, parishes, English counties and shires, ships carrying emigrants, and New England towns.

Taken from the papers of the Public Record Office, England, this work includes, when available, the ages of emigrants, their former English homes, the names of the ships that carried them, and other pertinent information. There is a muster roll of the inhabitants of Virginia and a list of the living and dead in Virginia in 1623. Comprehensive index.
