Early Editions of Theoretical and Historical Treatises of Pre-1800 Imprint

In the University's music collection there are several particularly noteworthy areas and one of these areas is the subject of the present check-list: historical and theoretical treatises with pre-1800 imprints. The format of each entry will be immediately intelligible except for a single notation. Following the bold-faced author statement is a pair of numbers separated by a slash. This symbol relates, on the authority of Repertoire international des sources musicales [Répertoire international des sources musicales: Écrits imprimés concernant la musique (München-Duisberg, G. Henle Verlag, 1971)], the total number of extant copies of the described title and then the number which have been located in the United States. (As an example, RISM lists 45 copies of Albrecht's Gründliche Einleitung of which eight are in the United States.) There are, of course, many ways of appraising the value of this collection of 125 titles. But, first and foremost, it should be acknowledged as the nucleus around which our strength in 18th century musical literature has been built.

 The bibliophile and the collector may quite appropriately be intrigued with the early imprints: Cotton, 1647 (of which we hold three copies); Kircher, 1650 (of which we have two copies); Meibom, 1652; Descartes, 1653, etc. Or again he may survey the rarity of many of the titles. It appears, for example, that our Barthélemon is unique, that we hold the only copy in the United States of Nauss, that of Mahaut we own one of two known copies in the States, our Grimm is one of six extant copies, our Collier one of ten known copies, etc. Yet another related aspect is monetary value. The following samples from recent antiquarian dealer catalogs may provide some insight on that point although there are enough pertinent intangibles - the condition of the item, for example - to disallow one's drawing any firm conclusions.

The musician-scholar will happily find here a large number of the classics of his discipline. In fact, a worthy bibliographic investigation might be to view this collection against Jacob Adlung's Anleitung zu der musikalischen Gelehrheit (1758) or Johann Adam Hiller's "Kritische Entwurf einer musikalischen Bibliothek" (in his Wöchentliche Nachrichten, 1768-1770). [Vincent Duckles in "The library of the mind; observations on the relationship between musical scholarship and bibliography" (Current thought in musicology, edited by John W. Grubbs, Austin, University of Texas Press, 1976) describes Adlung as "...essentially an annotated bibliography of books indispensable to the learned musician..." and says that Hiller gives "...the description of a model music library designed for the cultivated amateur who wished to penetrate beneath the surface of his experience and gain a deeper understanding of his art..."] The musician will also find, by surveying our general collection, that aggressive and systematic acquisition of reprints and microprints has fleshed out this significant core of early-edition material into an entirely representative working collection. Particularly worthy of remark, by reason of quantity and quality, are the tutors in the collection: C.P.E. Bach, Quantz, Leopold Mozart, Geminiani, Löhlein, Prelleur, Eisel (which, with one exception, stands as the only German woodwind tutor between 1700 and 1750, a period dominated by the French and English) [Warner, Thomas E. An annotated bibliography of woodwind instruction books, 1600-1830 (Detroit, Information Coordinators, 1967), p. xiv.], Bemetzrieder (written for the daughter of Diderot, who was a colleague of the author), etc.

 It is apparent then from several viewpoints that this is a significant collection and one abundantly worthy of further development. A word about the collection's origins is in order. With the exception of literally just a handful of titles, the collection described here came to the University in the 1940's from Mr. Alexander Mackay Smith. And, to add wonder to wonder, it formed only a part of that acquisition which included as well more than a thousand pieces of chamber music. (A catalog of the music, largely 18th century trio-sonatas, is in preparation.) The significance of the Mackay Smith Collection has been appropriately recorded in "A list of the most important libraries and collections with significant musical holdings of special interest" in the Harvard Dictionary of Music (Cambridge, Mass., The Belknap Press of Harvard University Press, 1969) and in the Grove's Dictionary of Music and Musicians (London, Macmillan and Co., 1954). It is hoped that the present and the proposed catalogs can in some small way convey the gratitude of the University's musical community for the privilege of housing the collection and the opportunity of daily access to its riches.
