Style Manuals

Consult these style manuals for formats and guidance in preparing bibliographic citations:

The Chicago Manual of Style
This is the style manual most often used by publisher of books and articles on music. Examine the examples and guidelines offered in Chapter 16.

Chapters 1 and 3 discuss a number of the issues involved in applying standard citation styles to references to musical compositions.

A Manual for Writers of Term Papers, Theses, and Dissertations
Turabian's manual is a distillation of the recommendations in The Chicago Manual. Chapters 9 and 11 offer a number of examples to follow in preparing citations to publications.

Sample Citations

Turabian's examples do not specifically cover citation styles for printed music or sound recordings. However, following her guidelines, we can created standardized citations to describe music editions and recordings. The following examples are adapted from formats specified by Turabian, 5th ed.: Single composer [Turabian §11:3]
