Finding Materials
Find call numbers through VIRGO, our online catalog. Ask any staff member for help with searching VIRGO. Floor plans for the Main floor and Lower level show the location of books, printed music, and other materials. Ask for sound recordings and videos at the circulation desk.
Checking Out Materials
Bring items to the Circulation Desk on the main level. Some materials do not circulate and must be used within the library: reference books, journals, Music Department concert recordings, some older sound recordings (including all 78's), and some items from the stacks.
Reserve Materials
Only 2 reserve recordings may be checked out by one person at one time; during exams the limit is 1 reserve recording per user. Reserve materials may not be removed from the library.
Laptops
Laptops are available at the circulation desk for 3-hour checkout to UVa faculty, staff and students with valid UVa ID cards. Laptops have a wireless connection to the UVa network and can be used only inside the Library. They are equipped with Microsoft Office 2000 (Word, Excel, Power Point, Access), e-mail, Netscape and Internet Explorer. Each laptop is networked to a Music Library printer.
Renewals
Books and scores which have not been recalled by another use may be renewed. Sound recordings and videos are not eligible for renewal by students. For further details, please see the Circulation Policy. If you are not able to renew online, please call us at 434-924-7041.
LEO
Faculty may request LEO delivery of books, scores, CDs and cassettes. LPs must be borrowed in person from the Music Library desk.
Status Inquiry
View your record in VIRGO's User Services section (under "User Status Inquiry") to see items you've checked out, due dates, recalls you may have or items being held for you. You can also check the status of Interlibrary Loans requests and view a list of any unpaid bills.
Returning Library Materials
All materials, with the exception of LPs, may be returned to any UVa Library. Please return LPs directly to the Music Library. Music has a book drop located at the bottom of the stairway outside the library entrance hall for use when the library is closed. There is also a drive-up book drop located near the rear entrance of Alderman Library. Please do not place sound recordings (LP's, CD's, or cassettes) in the book drop.
Fines and Replacement Charges
Library fines can be paid with exact change or a check made out to UVa Library. If an item is not returned by the end of the fourth week after the due date, it is considered lost, and a replacement fee will be charged. Library users with unpaid bills will have privileges restricted to in-house use until bills are paid. Replacement charges will be forgiven if the book is returned, but unpaid fines will still be due.
