Finding Materials
Find call numbers through VIRGO, our online catalog. Note that VIRGObeta has a special discovery tool for music. Ask any staff member for help with searching VIRGO or VIRGObeta.
Sound recordings and videos are in closed stacks at the circulation desk. Please ask for these materials by call number. Floor plans showing the locations of various materials are available at the circulation desk.
Checking Out Materials
Bring items to the Circulation Desk on the main level. Some materials do not circulate and must be used within the library: reference books and reference scores, Music Department concert recordings, some older sound recordings (including all 78's), and some items from the stacks.
Reserve Materials
Users may check out up to 3 reserve items at one time. Reserve materials may not be removed from the library.
Laptops
The Music Library currently has one laptop available for 3-hour checkout to U.Va. faculty, staff and students with valid U.Va. ID cards. Library laptops have a wireless connection (including printing) to the U.Va. network and must be used inside the Library. The software build is similar to the Library desktop PCs.
Renewals
Books, scores, and sound recordings which have not been recalled by another user may be renewed. For further details, please see the Circulation Policy. If you are not able to renew online, please call us at 434-924-7041.
LEO
Faculty may request LEO delivery of books, scores, and recordings.
Status Inquiry
View your record in VIRGO's User Services section (under "User Status Inquiry") to see items you've checked out, due dates, recalls you may have or items being held for you. You can also check the status of Interlibrary Loans requests and view a list of any unpaid bills.
Returning Library Materials
All materials may be returned to any U.Va. Library. The Music Library has a book drop located in the hallway outside the library entrance for use when the library is closed. There is also a drive-up book drop located near the rear entrance of Alderman Library. Please do not place sound recordings in book drops; instead, return them directly to a circulation desk.
Fines and Replacement Charges
Library fines can be paid with exact change or a check at Alderman Library from 8am-6pm, Monday-Thursday; 8-5pm, Friday. If an item is not returned by the end of the fourth week after the due date, it is considered lost, and a replacement fee will be charged. Library users with unpaid bills will have privileges restricted to in-house use until bills are paid. Replacement charges will be forgiven if the book is returned, but unpaid fines will still be due.
