The Cabell Family Papers

Documents Relating to the Military Career of Col. Nicholas Cabell (1750-1803)

In September 1780, the Amherst County Court recommended Nicholas Cabell for the rank of Colonel in the County's militia. The original and an 1855 copy of the resolution may be found in the Cabell Family Papers in the Albert and Shirley Small Special Collections Library at the University of Virginia (MSS 5084).

The County Court referred in the above resolution to Nicholas Cabell's earlier service as a Captain of Amherst County troops. "Early in this present contest with Great Britain," the justices testified, he "did actual service as a Captain of a Minute Company." To the left is a payroll completed by Nicholas Cabell during his service as a Captain, in which he recorded payments to troops for services rendered from July through September of 1776 (MSS 5084).
