Jackson Davis Collection of African American Educational Photographs

Search Strategies

Basic Search  |  Advanced Search  |  Map Search  |  Text Search

You may search the database for photographs in specific regions, states, counties, and even cities and towns that Mr. Davis visited on his extensive travels. Moreover, you may explore a vast collections of Mr. Davis' writings that provide a candid look into the thoughts of white educators in the Jim Crow era.

 

Basic Search

  1. Begin the search by entering a word or phrase in the Keyword field. It is also possible to search by entering a specific town, county, or state.  It is unnecessary to include commas, other punctuation or linking words such as and, but, or.

  2. Click on the Submit button and wait for the results. NOTE: The results may take a while to load depending on the speed of your Internet connection. Please be patient.

  3. Scroll down the Results page to see the results of your search. Once the pictures appear you may click directly on the image to see an enlarged version. You can click the image a total of three times, the third time being the largest version of the image. In addition, you may click on a link at the bottom of the page to find additional information such as school district statistics, school information, event information, or information regarding the people in the photographs.

 

Advanced Search

  1. Select Advanced Search from the menu on the left side of the webpage.

  2. Begin in the same manner as with the Basic Search. The advanced search option, however, allows you to search by a particular negative number, month or year.

    NOTE: You may search more than one field at a time.

  3. At any time during the search, it is possible to return to the Basic or Simple Search by clicking on the simple search link on the left margin of the web page.

 

Map Search

  1. Select Map Search from the menu on the left side of the webpage.

  2. Click on the portion/state of the United States you would like to search.

  3. Click on the county in the chosen state that you would like to search. After clicking the county you will be taken to a results page. Images that appear there will include all of the images taken of that county by Jackson Davis.

  4. You may chose another state at any time by either clicking on the Map Search link on the left of the webpage or by using your Back button on your browser.

 

Text Search

You may search a select portion of texts written by Jackson Davis and by others regarding education in the South.

  1. Select the Search Texts link from the menu on the left side of the webpage.

  2. You may search by clicking on the links provided on the page or by clicking on the Search Texts image on the page.
